Raja Ampat is the newest diving spot in Indonesia that catchesworld’s attention both from commercial and scientific sides.
The Raja Ampat archipelago encompasses more than 9,8 million acres of land and sea off the northwestern tip of indonesia’s West papua Province. Located in the Coral Triangle, the heart of tthe world’s coral reef biodiversity, the seas around Raja Ampat possibly hold the richest variety of species in the world  –an incredible 75% of all known coral species are found in the surrounding seas.
Raja Ampat or ‘four kings’ is the name given to these island and comes from a local myth. The four major island found here are Waigeo, Misool (which is home to ancient rock paintings), Salawati, and Batanta.
The area’s massive coral colonies along with relatively high sea surface temperatures, also suggest that its reefs may be relatively resistant to threast like coral bleaching and coral disease, which now jeopardize the survival of other coral ecosystem arround the world. The Raja Ampat islands are remote and relatively undisturbed by humans.
The high marine diversity in Raja Ampat is strongly influenced by its position between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as coral and fish larvae are more easly shared between the two oceans. 1,309fish species, 537 coral species (a remarkable 96% of all scleractinia reorded from Indonesia are likely to occur in these islands), and 699 mollusk species, the variety of marine life is staggering. Some areas boast enormous schools of fish and regular sightings of sharks, such as wobbegongs.
